PT1305
High Voltage Step-Up Converter
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The PT1305 is a step-up DC/DC converter designed for
driving up to 24V from a single cell Lithium Ion battery.
The PT1305 switches at 1.25 MHz, allowing the use of
tiny, low cost and low height inductors and cap acitors.
A c onstant frequency i nternally com pensated c urrent
mode PW M architecture resu lts in low, p redictable
output noise t hat is easy to filter. Low ESR ceram ic
capacitors ca n be used at t he ou tput, fu rther reducing
noise to m illivolt level. The high voltage switch on the
PT1305 i s rated at 2 6V, m aking t he de vices i deal f or
boost converters up 24V. It can generate 18V at 30mA
from 3.6V supply. The PT1305 is available in SOT23-5
and SOT23-6 packages.

APPLICATION INFORMATION
z Inductor Selections
For m ost o f the app lications of t he PT1 305, it is
recommended to u se an inductor o f 2 2uH. A lthough
small size is one of th e m ajor facto rs in selecting an
inductor, the s maller and thinner i nductors give higher
core lo sses at 1 .25MHz and DRC, resu lting in lower
efficiencies. The following tab le provides a list of
recommended inductors:

z Capacitor Selection
The small size of ceram ic capacitors makes them ideal
for PT1 305 ap plications. X5 R and X7 R typ es ar e
recommended because the y retain their capacitance
over wi der voltage a nd t emperature ra nges t han ot her
types su ch as Y5V or Z5 U. A 4.7 F inp ut cap acitor
and a 4.7 F output ca pacitor ar e s ufficient for m ost
PT1305 applications.
The compensation capacitor C3 is selected as 22p in the
typical application.
z Diodes Selection
Schottky d iodes, w ith their lo w forward voltage d rop
and fast re verse recove ry, a re the ideal c hoices for
PT1305 a pplications. T he f orward voltage dr op of a
Schottky diode rep resents t he cond uction l osses in t he
diode, wh ile th e diode capacitance (CT or C D)
represents th e switch ing l osses. For diode selectio n,
both f orward vol tage dr op and di ode capacitance need
to be c onsidered. Sc hottky diodes wi th higher cu rrent
ratings us ually ha ve l ower f orward voltage dr op a nd
larger diode capacitance, which can ca use significant
switching l osses at t he 1. 25MHz swi tching f requency
of the PT1305.
z Resistor Selection
The output voltage i s c ontrolled by t he feed back
resistor. The feedback reference is 1.25V. The output
voltage is 1.25*(1+R2/R1). In order to have accurate
output voltage, p recision resi stors are preferred (1% i s
recommended). T he form ula and table for R 1 an d R 2
selection are shown below

z Board Layout Consideration
As with all switch ing regulators, careful attention must
be paid to t he PCB board layou t and co mponent
placement. To maximize efficiency, switch rise and fall
times are m ade as s hort as possi ble. To prevent
electromagnetic i nterference (EM I) p roblems, pr oper
layout of the high frequency switching path is essential.
The voltage signal of the SW pin has sharp rise and fall
edges. Mi nimize the le ngth a nd a rea of all traces
connected to the SW pin and always use a ground plane
under th e swit ching reg ulator to m inimize in terplane
coupling. In ad dition, th e ground co nnection for th e
feedback resistor R1 should be tied directly to the GND
pin and not shared with any other component, ensuring
a clean, noise-free connection.
