DESCRIPTION
The A AP2967 l ow-noise, low -dropout, li near
regulator o perates fro m a 2.5V t o 5.5V i nput a nd is
guaranteed to deliver 300mA.
The AAP2967 is st able w ith sm all 2.2µF ceram ic
capacitor. Its perform ance suits batt ery powered
applications beca use of it s shutdown m ode, low
quiescent current, and very low dropout voltage. The
low dropout voltage allows for more utilization of a
battery’s ava ilable e nergy by opera ting closer t o i ts
end-of-life voltage.
The AAP2967 is av ailable in 1.5V,1.8V,2.5V, 2.8V,
3V ,3.3V and Adjustable versions.

Application Information
External Capacitors
Like any low -dropout re gulator, th e A AP2967 req uires
external capa citors for regulator stab ility. The A AP2967
is spe cifically desig ned for p ortable a pplications
requiring minimum board space and smallest components.
These cap acitors must b e co rrectly sel ected fo r g ood
performance.
Input Capacitor
A minimum input capacitance of 1µF is required between
the A AP2967 inp ut p in a nd gro und (the am ount of t he
capacitance may be inc reased w ithout l imit).This
capacitor m ust be located a dis tance of not m ore than
1cm fro m the in put p in and ret urned t o a cl ean a nalog
ground.
Any good quality ceram ic, tant alum, or fil m capacit or
may be used at the input. If a ta ntalum capacitor is used
at the input, it must be guaranteed by the manufacturer to
have a surge current rating sufficient for the application.
No-Load Stability
The A AP2967 w ill remain stab le a nd in regul ation w ith
no external l oad. Th is is s pecially important in C MOS
RAM keep-alive applications.
Output Capacitance
The AAP2967 is specifically designed to employ ceramic
output c apacitors as low a s 2. 2µF. C eramic capa citors
below 10 µF offer si gnificant co st an d sp ace sav ings,
along with high frequency noise filtering. Higher values
and ot her t ypes an d o f capacitor m ay b e u sed, bu t their
equivalent s eries resis tance (ESR) shou ld be m aintained
below 0 .5. Ceramic capacitor of the value required by
the A AP2967 are avai lable in th e foll owing d ielectric
types: Z5U, Y5V, X5R, and X7 R. The Z5 U and Y 5V
types exhibit a 50% or more drop in capacitance value as
their tem perature increase fro m 25°C, an important
consideration. The X 5R ge nerally maintain t heir
capacitance v alue w ithin ± 20% . Th e X 7R ty pe a re
desirable for their tighte r tol erance of 1 0% over
temperature.

Noise Bypass Capacitor
An external 10nF bypass capacitor at BP pin conjunction
with an internal resistor creates lowpass filter. Increasing
the capacitance will decrease the output noise. This cap is
connected directly to a high im pedance node in t he
bandgap reference circuit. Any significant loading on this
node will cause a change on the regulated output voltage.
For this reason, DC leakage current through this pin must
be k ept as l ow as possi ble for b est out put v oltage
accuracy. The types of capacitors best suited for the noise
bypass capacitor are ceramic and film.
Unlike many other LDO’s , addition of a noise reduction
capacitor doe s not effect the load tra nsient res ponse of
the de vice. H owever, it d oes af fect start -up t ime. The
smaller th e capacitance value, t he q uicker the st art-up
time.
Power Dissipation and Junction Temperature
Specified re gulator operation is ass ured to a j unction
temperature of 125° C; th e maximum junc tion
temperature sho uld be res tricted t o 1 25°C un der normal
operating c onditions. This restriction l imits the power
dissipation t he regulator can ha ndle in any gi ven
application. To ensure the junction temperature is within
acceptable li mits, calcu late the m aximum allow able
dissipation, PD(max), and the actual dissipation, PD, which
must be less than or equal to PD(max)

Where:
TJMAX is the maximum allowable junction temperature.
RθJA is the thermal resistance junction-to-ambient for the
package
TA is the ambient temperature.
The regulator dissipation is calculated using:

Power dissipation resulting from quiescent current is
negligible. Excessive power dissipation triggers the
thermal protection circuit.
Shutdown
The AAP2967 goes into sleep mode when the SHDN
pin is in a logic low condition. During this condition, the
pass transistor, error amplifier, and bandgap are turned
off, reducing the supply current to 60nA typical. The
SHDN pin may be directly tied to VIN to keep the part
on.
