Standalone Linear Li-Ion Charger with
Thermal Regulation
General Description
The BP13504 is a comp lete linear charger for single
cell lithium-ion bat teries. With small TDFN- 10
package and few external components, BP13504 is
well suited for portable applications. In addition, the
BP13504 is specific ally designed t o work within USB
power specifications.
No ext ernal s ense resist or and bl ocking d iode are
required. Charging cu rrent can be programmed
externally wi th a sin gle r esistor. T he b uilt-in th ermal
regulation facilitates charging with maximum power
without risk of overheating.
The BP13504 always preconditions the battery with
1/10 of t he program med charge cu rrent at the
beginning of a charge cycle, after it verifies that the
battery can be fast
-charged. The BP13504
automatically te rminates the c harge c ycle w hen
the charge current drops to 1/10th the programmed
value after the final float voltage is reached.
The BP13504 feat ures 13. 5V maximum rat ing
voltage for AC adapter, and it pro vides the charge
current up to 1.2A. Ot her feat ures incl ude batt ery
temperature monitoring, reverse current protection,
shutdown mode, charging current monit or, under
voltage lockout, aut omatic recha rge a nd st atus
indicator.

Function
Positive Input Supply Voltage. Provides power to the charger. ACIN can range from 4.5V
to 13.5V and should be bypassed with at least a 1PF capacitor. When ACIN drops to within
30mV above the BATT pin voltage, the BP13504 enters shutdown mode, dropping IBATT to
less than 1PA.
Not connected.
Open-Drain Charge Status Output. A n internal N-channel MOSFET connects CHG_SB pin
to ground when the battery is charging. After the charge cycle is completed, the internal
N-channel MOSFET is replaced by a weak pull-down of approximately 25PA, indicating an
“AC present” condition. When the BP13504 detects an under voltage lockout condition,
CHG_SB is forced high impedance.
Open-Drain Battery Power Good Output. An internal N-channel MOSFET connects
PGOODB pin to ground when ACIN is under 4.2V. PGOODB is forced low during normal
operation.
Ground.
Charge Current Program, Charge Current Monitor and Shutdown Pin. The charge current
is prog rammed by connecting a 1% resi stor, R SET, t o g round. When charging in
constant-current mode, this pin servos to 1.5V. In all modes, the voltage on this pin can be
used to measure the charge current using the following formula:
IBATT = (VSET / RSET) * 500
The I SETA pin can al so be used to shu tdown the charger. Disconnecting the program
resistor from gr ound all ows a 1 PA curren t to pull the I SETA pin high . When it reach es th e
2.15V shu tdown threshol d voltage, the char ger enters shu tdown mode. This pin is a lso
clamped t o ap proximately 2. 5V. R econnecting R SET t o grou nd w ill return th e charger t o
normal operation.
The ISETA pin must not be directly shorted to ground at any condition.
Not connected.
Charge Enable Input (active low). This pin is weakly pulled low internally.
TS pin is t he input for an ex ternal NT C ther mistor. When the T S pin voltage is out of the
window, determined by the VTMIN and VTMAX, the BP13504 stops charging and indicates a
fault condition.
Charge Current Output and battery v oltage feedback. This pin pro vides charge curr ent
to the ba ttery and regul ates the final f loat v oltage to 4 .2V. A n internal precision resis tor
divider from this pin sets the float voltage which is disconnected in shutdown mode.
